SUMMER 2015 | wyoea.org 5 Ron Sniffin WEA Executive Director rsniffin@wyoea.org EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE Another WEA election is over. For the third time, we utilized the option of voting electronically via the Internet plus the ability to vote by telephone. For the first time, this election included the opportunity for a local to include their local election on the electronic ballot. The Campbell County Education Association included their local elections on the statewide ballot. While we would have preferred a better turnout statewide, the results from the election illustrate that when a local election is included on the ballot, the turnout in that local is significantly greater. Over 23% of members in Campbell County voted in the election, compared to just over 10% statewide. We also applaud the leaders in Campbell County EA for their significant efforts to get out the vote. They recruited WEA-Retired members to conduct voter stations throughout the district, and even held a voting party at Starbucks, with a cookie waiting for members after they voted. The future of voting is now up to you through your representative to Delegate Assembly. This past DA, a Bylaws amendment was passed that outlines that it is up to the Delegate Assembly to determine how the following year's election will be held. I believe this was a good compromise between those who prefer the elections to be conducted by using paper ballots and those who like voting electronically. Ultimately, it comes down to you and whether you choose to exercise your right to vote. We encourage you to vote! STATEWIDE CAMPBELL COUNTY EA 10% 23% WEA Elections – It's up to you! Campbell County Education Association was the first local to take advantage of using the electronic ballot for their local election this year. To help voter turnout they enlisted the help of retired members in the area to spread the word in the local schools. The local also set up a voting station at a local coffee shop, where voters could enjoy a more-relaxed atmosphere.
