She has helped Emiliana pioneer world-class biodynamic wines, which she will discuss in the Going Green: All Hail Mother Nature seminar. Benedetta Poretti, Family Proprietor, Florio, Marsala, Italy With production dating back to 1833, Florio is located in Italy's sunbelt, where the Florio family has been instru- mental in bringing Marsala wine back in Italy—and around the world. Professor Poretti will be a welcome addition to our faculty and to our A Sense of Place seminar. Nicolas Quille, Winemaking Director, Pacific Rim, Washington State, U.S. Although he's the only American wine producer in our faculty, Professor Quille is a native of Lyon, France, where he is a third-generation wine business family member. After working in Burgundy, Dijon, Reims and Champagne, Professor Quille came to the United States in 1997, landing in Washington State to earn his MBA. Professor Quille will be speaking at the Going Green: All Hail Mother Nature seminar. Christian Scrinzi, Chief Winemaker, Bolla, Pedemonte, Italy With 692 acres of vineyards at his fingertips in Valpolicella, Professor Scrinzi has steered Bolla toward impeccable quality by carefully review- ing each vineyard and grading its quality of fruit. Along with presenting at the An Amore for Amarone seminar, his commitment to implement- ing as few pesticides and chemicals as possible will be dis- cussed in the Going Green: All Hail Mother Nature seminar. Andrea Sartori, Family Proprietor, Sartori di Verona, Negrar, Italy Professor Sartori is the great grandson of Pietro Sartori, founder of Sartori di Verona, now one of the Veneto's leading wine producers. The former president of Italy's producer trade group, the Unione Italiana Vini, Sartori will bring generations of family experi- ence to his insider look at Amarone in the An Amore for Amarone seminar. Stuart Bourne, Winemaker, Château Tanunda, Barossa, Australia A South Australia native who cut his teeth work- ing at some of West Australia, Clare Valley and Victoria's top wineries, Professor Bourne has returned to his Barossa roots at Château Tanunda, where his wines have reached world-class status. Professor Bourne will examine the age- old question of winemaking versus grape-growing during the A Sense of Place seminar. The Cru Artisan Courseload 10–11 a.m. Going Green: All Hail Mother Nature This seminar, led by faculty members Enrico Ceruilli, Rudy Buratti, Christian Scrinzi, Nicolas Quille and Noelia Orts, will discuss green, greener and greenest in winemaking. Topics will include sustainability, organics and biodynamics, and will offer insights from producers striving to make a difference. 11:15–1:15 A Sense of Place This class has three sections. In Hillside vs. Seaside, Christian Scrinzi, Rudy Buratti and Enrico Cerulli will examine the role of topography. A look at Rescue Wines—bringing unique varietals back from the brink of extinction—will feature Mauro Merz, Alberto Lazzarino, Salvatore Geraci and Benedetta Poretti. Does winemaking trump grape growing; do blends obscure typic- ity? These questions will be addressed in Terroir vs. Technique, with Franco Bernabei, Nicolas Quille, Mauro Merz, Alberto Lazzarino, Enrico Cerulli, Rudy Buratti, Christian Scrinzi. 1:45–2:45 An Amore for Amarone This insider look at one of the world's most unique wines will feature Andrea Sartori and Christian Scrinzi looking at the past, present and future of Amarone. 3:00-4:00 Brunello Deconstructed Castello Banfi Chief Winemaker Rudy Buratti will detail his experience in clonal research and vineyard variation for Italy's national treasure—Sangiovese.
