Gregg, who teaches 2nd grade, told the Valley News of Shenandoah she is always looking for ways to incorporate different experiences into learning. "I always try to do hands-on experiments, and I was able to purchase science kits with grant funds, and incorporate different experiments and allow them to be the creators," Gregg told the paper. The award comes with $3,000, half of which can be used to purchase items for the classroom and the other half which can be used for personal expenses. Transitions Former National Education Association Student Program Chair and current teacher in Council Bluffs Thomas Leaders shared his reflections on being a new teacher in NEA Today, the publication of the National Education Association. "Today, my constituents are the 24 smart, brave, inquisitive and sometimes boisterous fifth graders in room 219 at Lewis & Clark Elementary School," Leaders wrote. "As a new teacher, I know that even when I'm a veteran there will be learning curves and new things to master." You can find the latest edition, and archives, for NEA Today magazine here: www.nea.org/home/1814.htm From the Trail Erin Montgomery, 2015 Iditarod Teacher on the Trail and Iowa State Education Association member in the Camanche School District has dutifully filed updates from the field. Her photos and stories from the Alaskan trail focus on the people and the sled dogs that make the Iditarod such a unique race. The Iditarod, billed as "the last great race on earth," is run in early March with competitors traveling from Anchorage to Nome. The racers, called mushers, command teams of 16 dogs. As Teacher on the Trail, Montgomery developed a lesson plans about the dogs used in the race which she shares with classrooms across the globe.
