Charles City Education Association member and Washington Elementary Art teacher Phillip Frenchick puts finishing touches on a backdrop for use at an ISEA "Read Across America" event. Frenchick said the two-piece mural took about 15 hours to create. It depicts the Cat in the Hat, Things 1 & 2, Sally, her brother, and the goldfish from the iconic Seuss book. More than 6,200 Iowans signed a petition supporting fair funding for public schools to the Iowa Legislature. The petition was sponsored by the Iowa State Education Association, Iowa Association of School Boards, School Administrators of Iowa, Iowa Area Education Agencies, the Rural School Advocates of Iowa and the Urban Education Network of Iowa. UniServ Unit Two Director Jason Enke (left) puts on a magic show for attendees of the Iowa State Education Association's "Read Across America" event at the Charles City Library. Enke said he's been practicing sleight-of-hand tricks since childhood. The "Read Across America" event in Des Moines, included an appearance by Surge, mascot of the Iowa Energy basketball team, D-League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies. The Iowa Energy partners with the Des Moines Education Association on several events throughout the year. Iowa State Education Association President Tammy Wawro presents a scholarship check for $1,000 to Andrea Hopp of Donnellson. Hopp is a graduate of the University of Iowa and is taking classes at Iowa Wesleyan. She is the daughter of Ft. Madison Education Association member Kelly Hackett.
