3D concert finished at LaserPacific OLLYWOOD — LaserPacific provided dailies production, final editorial and DI color grading for 20th Century Fox's Glee:The 3D Concert Movie. The film went from the stage to the screen in just eight weeks. LaserPacific was as- sisted by its affiliate, PostWorks, New York, which split the dailies processing. The concert was recorded with a mix of Arri, Red and Sony cameras, and each needed slightly different handling by DI colorist Mike Sowa during the grade. Also presenting a challenge was the fact that the edit was still ongoing while Sowa was grading the film. "We had the added challenge of re-conforming reels, adding material, pulling out material," Sowa recalls."Whenever I received new material, I was able to carry my color corrections to the new cut efficiently using the Autodesk Lustre. That allowed me to focus on creative collaboration with the filmmakers." Sowa spent three weeks of 12-hour shifts to complete the project on time. Local Hero posts Scene from "Derriére les Murs" © Stéphanie Dupont ANTA MONICA — Leandro Marini founded Local Hero Post (www.localheropost.com) six years ago, as what he describes as "a bit The world's first Digital Lab for VFX dailies. Optimized for DPX, OpenEXR & RAW Stack unlimited shot versions in a single timeline Full XML support and powerful database integration for effortless media loading Full automation of aspect ratio or frame offset correction Automatically set correct LUT based on file type Mac or PC: $4,995 Free trial offer at www.assimilateinc.com/trial of an experiment." He saw a change taking place in acquisition, from film to digital formats, and envisioned a way to perform DIs at a much lower cost. Today the studio has more than 60 feature DIs to its credit, all performed using any of the facility's dozen Assimilate Scratch systems (one of those is pictured above). Marini saw an opportunity to develop a less expensive desktop system at Local Hero. While doing so, he was introduced to Scratch, a system that was very much what he had also envisioned a DI system to be. Over the years, Local Hero Post has worked closely with Assimilate to provide feedback on releases and even serves as a beta site. For the first five years in business Marini served as colorist, but he has since been re- placed by veteran film colorist Michael Eaves, whose credits include The Day After Tomorrow. Marini's digital experience and Eaves film background create a good balance. And while Marini saw digital as the future for DI, he's quick to point out that Local Hero does not "evangelize digital," in- stead they "evangelize good color." Local Hero has completed work on a number of features recently, in- DIGITAL INGENUITY cluding the upcoming ATM for Gold Circle Films. Directed by David Brooks, ATM follows a couple and their co-worker as they make a late- night stop at a cash machine that turns deadly. The feature was acquired on Red and involved 450 VFX shots. The studio also provided post services for Shark Night 3D. Its 2K DI the- ater was used as a review environment for in-progress and preview ver- sions of the stereo 3D film. — Marc Loftus 20 Post • September 2011 www.postmagazine.com H ATM Glee S
