ISEA Communiqué • isea.org December 2014/January 2015 13 MEMBERS AT WORK Students from Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, Mount Mercy College, Des Moines Area Community College, Hawkeye Community College and other schools pose for a group shot at the ISEA Student Conference in West Des Moines. The two-day conference helps aspiring educators learn about starting their careers, organizing local chapters and political advocacy. Students help a local school by undertaking work projects. Northeast Iowa Education Unit UniServ Director Kevin McDermott speaks to a class of Grinell College students about issues in education and the education profession. Fairfield High School Teacher Scott Slechta holds two parts of a phone book he just ripped in half during a presentation at Central College in Pella during the Iowa Association of Colleges for Teacher Education conference. The IACTE invited the Iowa State Education Association to discuss the challenges new teachers face in the classroom in an effort the better align their curriculums with the needs of the classroom. Iowa 2014 Teacher of the Year Jane Schmidt shows her support for the Iowa State Education Association at the "Excellence in Education" dinner which she keynoted. Schmidt, a teacher from Maquoketa, gave her take on the "Three Little Pigs" as it applies to the teaching profession. Des Moines Area Education Association's Kathleen Crouse hands an iPad to Samuelson Elementary School Teacher Shawn Purcell. Purcell won a drawing open to DMEA members who recruited new members.
