The 34th annual San Francisco International Wine Competition took place at the Nikko Hotel in downtown San Francisco on June 20, 21 and 22, 2014. A record year, 4570 products were entered from 26 states and 31 countries, confirming once again that this is truly a unique international event. Under Director of Judging Tim McDonald, 58 judges from the arenas of retail, restaurants, winemaking, media and consulting from Tokyo to Calistoga, divided into panels of four experts, judged the entries over three days of assiduous tasting and professional evaluation. Double Gold med- als were awarded when all members of the panel agreed that the product deserved a Gold medal. It's thrilling to see the international aspect of this competition grow and thrive every year. To have 31 countries participate is unprecedented, showing the great excitement around the enjoyment of wine globally. Naturally we are also excited about the quality and caliber of the U.S. entries every year, and we see the bar of quality continue to rise across the board. As in previous years, emerging trends in the wine industry were reflected in the entries. America's love affair with Cabernet Sauvignon was evidenced with 500 entries this year, while Pinot Noir showed a significant increase—up 22% with 419 submissions. Due to space restraints, we are only able to list the Double Gold and Gold winners here. For complete results that include the many worthy Silver and Bronze medal winners, go to Look also for the announcement on page 55 of this issue about THE TASTING PANEL's Double Gold Tour, which will feature trade tastings of many of the Double Gold winners from both the San Francisco International Wine Competition and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. We hope that beverage trade members across the country will join us to discover these wonderful world-class wines and spirits. — Anthony Dias Blue, Executive Director THE TASTING PANEL MAGAZINE WINERY OF THE YEAR Maryhill Winery, Goldendale, Washington ANDRÉ TCHELISTCHEFF WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR Cinzia Merli, Le Macchiole, Bolgheri, Italy PORTFOLIO OF THE YEAR Trinchero Family Estates, St. Helena, California
