Remember: "when in doubt, talk to an iowa State education Association building representative and your mentor" Professional Responsibilities • Complete all licensure paperwork and submit to boee. • Insure that licensure matches teaching assignment. (do you need a conditional license?) • Sign all the necessary insurance forms. • Complete Mandatory Reporter class. • Investigate availability of additional course work if issued a class A or b license. Classroom Responsibilities • Acquire information regarding grade-level, building, and district curriculum(s). • Inquire about building policies regarding submission of lesson plans and format for lesson plans and content . • Get class lists and see if you have enough material for the students assigned. • Check your roster and determine if there are special needs students in your classes. Make sure you have reviewed the ieps and can meet the necessary accommodations. • Find out if there is a Teacher's Edition of the text being used and find where it is kept. • Learn the policy for making copies of materials. • Prepare your classroom norms. Building Responsibilities • Learn the building access policy. • Read technology acceptable use policy. • Know if there are required forms, hall passes, incentives, charts, graphs, syllabus needed. • Provide the district with contact information. • Learn the district policies and/or procedures for emergency response (fire, storms, bomb, school invasion). • Determine if there are specific instructional strategies expected to be imbedded in your curriculum area. • Know the contractual/normal arrival and departure time and where you park. • Review staff dress code provided there is one. • Review the district building and/or district-wide discipline policy. • Determine if there is a common set of building/ classroom rules that students are expected to follow. • Obtain copies of the student and faculty handbooks. • Know where materials are kept and how do you get them. • Find out if unit tests or semester tests are required. • Review district/building grading scale policies if they exist at your school. • Know the procedures for parent-teacher conferences. • Find out if there's an Open House or Family Night at your school.
