92  /  the tasting panel  /  july 2014 W e are different and we are glad to be different," says Arturo Lomeli, founder and Master Distiller of Clase Azul Tequila. "We love what we do and we are blessed that people love our tequila." Lomeli first began rethinking tequila in the mid-1990s. "I started mixing pome- granate juice with tequila in my mother's kitchen," he recalls. "Pomegranate wasn't as popular back then as it is now, so this was a great, fresh idea." As he bought pomegranates from nearby farmers, Lomeli was struck with the idea to take it one step further by no longer outsourc- ing the tequila used in his concoctions and make one himself, ensuring it would be premium quality.
