Among the numerous events that filled the experience was The CAB Camp, a three-day, comprehensive, educationally focused tour of the Paso Robles AVA that explored Cabernet and red Bordeaux varietals, hosted by our sister magazine, The SOMM Journal. At this first installment of our SOMM Camp events, 20 select sommeliers and key wine buyers participated in hands-on, instructional experiences with Paso Robles area winemakers and vineyard managers, including: component tastings, analysis of clonal selections, vineyard tours, a 2013 vintage barrel tasting of 27 vintners' wines, a current vintage tasting; rare and library tastings to showcase the ageability of these wines, plus numerous winemaker lunches and dinners. I was lucky to go off on my own to visit several wineries for some one-on-one tastings. Meanwhile, Randy Caparoso, Editor- at-Large for The SOMM Journal, has the big story to tell. As Director for our first SOMM Camp, he will document his experi- ence hosting those 20 sommeliers and buyers on a tour de terroir in a feature story in the August issue of The SOMM Journal (check it out online August 1 at www.SOMMJournal.com).
