40 { THE SOMM JOURNAL } JUNE/JULY 2014 { east coast } FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS, I've been on the ground for THE TASTING PANEL as its New York editor. You've probably seen me swirling, sipping and taking notes and pictures for our coverage of events, openings and producer visits. I'm pleased to expand that relationship with the launch of The SOMM Journal. As a member of the Wine Media Guild, I know many wine-writing peers mourned the demise of the magazine last fall, and rejoiced at news of its rebirth. I count myself among them. If you are a writer wanting to contribute stories in, from and about the New York area, I welcome your ideas. We want back stories, insider views of the industry, trends and trendsetters. New York is blessed with a revival of craft spirits and beer, so we will think outside the wine bottle. Look for stories on hot spirits and the cool people making them and making things with them. In the works: "The Quaff Report," an industry-driven New York City area tasting group that will explore wines by region, variety or theme. We'll expand this to spirits, too. Interested in being on the guest list? Let me know! And, as the unarguable center of the food universe (okay, I know Portland, Chicago and San Francisco think this is open for debate), we will report on the city's culinary scene—always changing, always relevant. And it won't be only established chefs: We hope to tap the rich resources of the many area culinary and hospitality programs including stories for chefs and hospitality professionals in training. Whether you're a top toque, a master mixologist, a super sommelier or a student of wine or food, we hope to have content for you. And by you. Please drop me an email at lana@sommjournal.com. Looking forward to uncorking that bottle with you! Lana Bortolot East Coast Editor PHOTO : DOUG YOUNG Greetings from New York! A newspaper reporter by training, Lana Bortolot began her wine-writ- ing career for the THE TASTING PANEL magazine with her first trip to Bordeaux in 2009. Since that first swirl of Cabernet, she has trav- eled to more than 30 wine regions in a dozen countries, camera and tasting book in hand. Lana received the WSET Intermediate and Advance certificates with distinc- tion and merit, and is working on the Diploma in Wine and Spirits. Lana is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal, where she writes on community development, and Entrepreneur magazine, where she reports on designs for small businesses. She is a photographer, an urban explorer and a flea- and food- market junkie. Her passport is always at the ready. Somm Journal June/July.indd 40 5/9/14 12:08 PM
