OUTLOOK directors Andrew Niccol: Time and money — there's never enough of either. Stormy Weather on Super 35mm and HD StormStock® The world's premier storm footage library. (817) 276-9500 www.stormstock.com 22 Post • December 2013 www.postmagazine.com chance — your second life. No matter how bad you think it was on Omaha Beach, how bad the slaughter was during the shoot, you've now got a chance in post to win the war." WEAKNESSES: "It's always time — the pressure of the schedule. And because post is full of unsung heroes and geniuses, it also encourages very bad behavior at the studios. Guys in dark rooms keep pulling off temporal miracles, so people in offices go, 'Ahh, they'll be fine.' And what someone needs to do is just burn the fuckin' place down and let something very bad happen — such as totally miss a release date, and then we'll see. It's just like that great scene in The Big Lebowski where he goes, 'You see Larry? You see what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass?' And it's getting worse. They all expect miracles at a faster pace than ever now." OPPORTUNITIES: "Post gives you the opportunity to underline, underscore and make bigger — to shine a light on something that didn't work when you were shooting it. It's truly heaven to have the opportunity to make something sing." THREATS: "Ignorance and time are the big enemies, and ironically enough the heroics of post — and all the engineers, supervisors and technicians. I don't know whether they need stronger unions or better representation to just get people to respect the whole process more and back off and stop cramming them with these ten- or 12-week post schedules that just aren't realistic — and meanwhile the studios are spending years and years to 'develop' scripts, and then they expect all these post heroes to sort out all the mistakes in just ten weeks? So sadly the main threat is from within, and I feel it needs some sort of push-back." OUTLOOK FOR 2014: "I'm quite positive but Hollywood's got no excuse. We're still coming out of a recession — and therefore a boom time for movies, and so there shouldn't be much complaining. And I'm optimistic about the kind of movies I make, that guarantee audiences a bit of a laugh, a good night out and value for [their] money."
