Early conversations with our showrunner identified Simon as a no-frills guy whose heroes were actors like Denzel Washington and Marlon Brando. He was drawn to discipline and craft, rather than trends or quick gratification. We approached Simon's apartment with this in mind, pulling references for a space that we all knew very well: a first LA rental. For the apartment exterior, we chose a modest dingbat-era complex built around a courtyard, with parking tucked underground. Its character felt transitional and universal. On stage, we replicated its vintage, textured, amber glass balcony panels; custom ironwork; and sourced a backing to match the view out the sliding door, an Ed Ruscha-esque SoCal vernacular mix of single family homes, stucco apartments and palm trees. Inside was a modest one-bedroom with low ceilings, rough plaster and walls layered with decades of paint, the bones of the apartment needed to tell his story in lieu of possessions. We built the space to feel worn in, functional and slightly anonymous, as if it had quietly hosted countless versions of the same dream. Simon's palette leaned cool and restrained. Desaturated blues and teals dominated the set, with utilitarian finishes that felt impersonal—a lived-in, practical space to support the life of an ambitious artist, while carrying the ghosts of other dreamers who came before him. One of these former residents is Simon's ex- girlfriend, who moves out in the first episode.
