C Getting the Callback Marvel Television's new series is different from the usual superhero tale. More grounded, more human and rooted in a version of Los Angeles we know intimately as native Angelenos. Wonder Man lured us with this arc: the origin story of a struggling creative navigating the space between who he is and who he hopes to become, chasing opportunities while confronting the unglamorous realities of Hollywood. The script compelled us to retrace our own LA journeys alongside its hero, Simon Williams. In our initial meeting, we pitched the balancing act between chasing the Hollywood dream and survival. This was also the story that director and co-EP Destin Daniel Cretton, showrunner Andrew Guest and Marvel executive and co-EP Brian Gay wanted to tell. Once they invited us to design the show, we called on some real-life superheroes to join us, starting with all-star Supervising Art Director Jacqueline Kay. Art Department, Assemble! Close to Home Wonder Man made its home at Radford Studios. Our built sets would be everything from living rooms to spaceships, alternate dimensions to a high security prison for supervillains. In designing Simon's apartment, pinning down his neighborhood was key to shaping its style. We wanted somewhere close to Hollywood itself, but without the tourists and posturing. East Hollywood felt like a suitably affordable pocket of the city, gritty and congested, but also a livable neighborhood with character. 3" 35'-0" 9'-8" 2'-10" 2'-6" 1'-2" 3-'7" 2'-0" 6" 4'-0" 4'-6" 3'-6" 9'-0" 7'-0" 3'-0" 6'-0" 2'-9" 1'-2" 14'-0" 21'-0" R1'-0" 2'-4" 6'-4" 6'-11" 5" 12'-0" 6'-6" 2'-6" 12'-1" 12'-9" 6'-3" 6" 3'-0" 3'-0" 10" 5'-0" 2'-0" 5'-4" 4'-0" 5'-10" 10'-4" 6'-1" 9" 3'-1 1 2 " 5'-6" 11'-8" 3'-0" 2'-4 3 4 " 8'-0" 3'-0" 9 1 4 " 7 3 4 " 4'-8" 4'-0" 2'-10 3 4 " 3'-0" 3" 12'-0" 29'-0" 4'-8" R2'-0" 3'-0" 2'-8" 2'-1" 6'-1" 4'-4" 1'-4" 3'-4" 16'-1" 9'-0" 5'-1" 19'-0" 42'-0" 42'-8" 11'-0" 7'-7 1 2 " 4'-0" 2'-8" 3'-0" 8'-1" 6" 6" 6" 6" 4" 6" 3'-0" 20'-0" 38'-0" 3" 7'-0" 4'-11 1 2 " 1'-6" 3" 3" 3" 2'-6" 3'-0" 2'-6" 3'-0" 4'-0" 2'-9" 3" 3'-3" 6" 7'-0" 3'-0" 1'-9" 5" 1'-6" 6" 8" 2'-7" 3" 5'-0" 1'-2" 2'-10" 6'-8" 9'-0" 1'-4 1 2 " 4'-0" 1'-0" 14'-0" 3'-0" 1'-4" PLAN VIEW - SIMON'S APARTMENT SCALE: 1 4 " = 1'-0" PL LIVING ROOM KITCHEN BATHROOM BEDROOM HALLWAY +4'-0" WILD ON CART WILD EXT.
