Rocky's ship evolved over many months. Its high frequency, otherworldly, non-sensical, majestic form to be revealed in a startling way against the industrial simplicity of the Hail Mary. One pirouettes against the other to Dan Pemberton's exquisite soundtrack. A central commodity is Xenonite, an incredibly strong, versatile, structural polymer used by the Eridians. We created our interpretation of this material, discovering it throughout the film, as in Rocky's tunnel. The transparent Xenonite pressure wall required great artistry from the sculpting, plastering and construction department. We needed it to act as a mesmerizing cinematic membrane between our two characters, Greig's turning sunlight illuminating their friendship. From the outset, Chris and Phil wanted to construct as much of the film as we possibly could, to make it immersive and viable for the audience. We replicated the pressure windows from the ISS as closely as possible. Real milled cold steel, perforated sheet metals, woven kevlar and aeronautical hardware became the core of our built surfaces.
