The Petrova line played a pivotal role in Andy Weir's novel. We designed and built a mechanical Petrovascope as part of the cockpit avionics. All the space hardware was designed to a high tolerance, to feel tactile and functional. The spin drive refers to the propulsion system of the Hail Mary and was powered by astrophage. This alien microbe harbors immense power and converts stellar energy into mass with great efficiency. We decided to use simple graphic shapes for the interior of the ship, circles, squares and rectangles, as powerful framing devices. The circle representing an ideal structure, unity and equality. Rich and reflective enamel finishes allowed for a play of light. Grace chooses to return to Rocky's home planet, Erid, which has a high-pressure ammonia atmosphere and is intensely hot. The Eridians construct a tremendous glass dome, artificially lit, which contains Grace's home and living world where he returns to being a teacher.
