MUSIC VIDEOS www.postmagazine.com 28 POST NOV/DEC 2022 BABA JENKINS — WILD Los Angeles-based Baba Jenkins recently released their debut album "Copper," as well as a music video from the 10-track record. Wild is set in a shuttered club, with a dusty bar and vacant stage. A young couple explores the prop- erty and imagines the possibilities of turning it into a vibrant musical venue. Suspicious at first, the couple appears in black & white as they explore the space, but upon imagining a cool band hitting the stage, the venue come alive with color and activity. Baba Jenkins consists of Rone Worthen (vocals), Guy Keefer (guitar/produc- tion), Ekko Gaha (drums) and Kerwin "Skooter" Williams (bass/production), and each member is given an opportunity to shine on the album's different tracks. The group draws inspiration from a wide array of musical influences and styles, and refers to their sound as "gumbo." Portions of their album sales go toward Sharing Love With Others, a non-profit that helps feed homeless people on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. According to director Katie Pyne, the music video was shot in color, with the black & white sections styled in post. The production shot with Arri's Alexa and Zeiss anamorphic lenses, though the beginning and ending scenes were captured using Cooke spherical lenses. "The movement you see in the video was done with a Steadicam," Pyne explains, noting that the edit came together in Adobe Premiere. LADYTRON — CITY OF ANGELS Synth quartet Ladytron (www.ladytron.com) recently premiered the lead single from their upcoming album, "Time's Arrow." The City of Angels video came in time for Halloween and is full of haunting imagery. Manuel Nogueira directed the project, which plays as a choreographed mu- sical thriller inspired by cult favorites of Roeg and Argento. The video was shot in the mansion of architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha and stars actress Bianca Comparato (Netflix's 3%). Comparato plays a photographer who is entranced and drawn in by a mysterious force. "I'm such a fan of Ladtyron," says the actress. "I was lucky enough to be in the music video…The whole experience was a dream come true." According to director Nogueira, the shoot took place over one long day across two locations. In addition to architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha's huge house, the second location was a real photo lab. "We shot with an Alexa LF, Zeiss Supreme primes and a Canon 50mm dream lens," Nogueira recalls. "Cinematographer Juliano Lopes chose — and chased — this lens to achieve this ethereal vintage look." Nogueira edited the piece himself, collaborating with Daniel Hunt and get- ting support from post house Liquor Media in São Paulo, Brazil. "Music videos are all about challenges," says Nogueira. "Creating a story and finding the pieces of it inside a budget are always the challenge, and at the same time, what makes the process interesting and independent." Ladytron is Helen Marnie, Mira Aroyo, Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu. "Time's Arrow" will be available from Cooking Vinyl on January 20th. LIV.E — GHOST Liv.e (Instagram: _osun), who was raised in Dallas and is now based in Los Angeles, recently directed a music video for her new single, Ghost. The track's high-energy breakbeat is juxtaposed with ethereal synths and piano, along with her emotive vocals on top, and serves as a preview to her forthcoming album, expected to be released in 2023. The Ghost music video was shot by Qlick (Cinque Mubarak) and Flatspot, and basks the artist in beams of red and blue light. Production took place at Flatspot's studio in Oakland, CA, over two days. The space at Flatspot is small but flexible, allowing the team to move and dress walls as they saw fit. Canon's C100 was used as the main camera for the shoot. Imagery of Liv.e appears through what looks to be a fractured kaleidoscopic lens. "The concept for the visuals mirrors the energy of the song and my mind state when I wrote it," says Liv.e. "Ghost was made in observation of myself going through the stages of grief after a major loss." The video was edited at Flatspot using Adobe Premiere and After Effects. The team held a number of Zoom calls to discuss the progress over the course of a few weeks. With a finished video now under her belt, Liv.e says she learned that even with planning and preparation, one should still have a backup plan. "Try to follow a plan as much as you can, but don't get too attached to that plan because it might lead to unnecessary disappointment."
