Having that in the back of my mind, I decided to take my own family story as a reference to help recreate the 1980s from a Korean perspective. I dug out some of my parents' old wedding photos from the '70s and some 1980s rural household goods from my aunt's house in the Korean countryside as reference. And slowly, I started to realize that although Minari is an atigraial film it a great nmer erid details didnt ant t design tis film as a reminiscence of the past, since the '80s has such strong visual characteristics that might overwhelm te film. nstead anted t reate a lassi and timeless quality by being more selective in the use of '80s design elements. It was more important to immerse the audience into the characters' lives rather than create a very loud 1980s look. Simplicity is the key to keeping the story sincere, humble and gravitating toward the audience. The picturesque description of the Minari countryside was a very important reference for the Art Department.
