The Korean War scene in episode one, the ritual scene in episode two, and a dance sequence in a later episode were all created as animatics to give the director and producers a sense of timing. Many other shots did not need full animatics and shooting boards with shot descriptions were delivered. Because of time constraints, the storyboard department would thumbnail scripts quickly to allow the production and VFX team to give notes and adjust before we proceeded to a more rendered board. As each director came into preproduction for their respective episodes, the storyboards and or animatics were presented to them for notes and revisions. "Sometimes storyboards were used in editing to facilitate pickup shots that were needed," explains VFX supervisor Kevin Blank. "The directors could watch the proposed shots right in the edit and get a sense of mood and timing." "For me, storyboards are mostly a tool for communication," notes director Jeff rey Nachmanoff . "On a VFX heavy show like Lovecraft Country, there are many elements that will be added in post, but the cast and crew need to know what the fi nal shot is supposed to look like while we are on set. Storyboards can really help with that process, especially when you are doing green screen work. One interesting thing about that show is that we were shooting in Atlanta, but Frank was in Los Angeles. We had to do everything by FaceTime and screen sharing, but it ended up being a remarkably smooth experience. I guess it was a preview of COVID-era collaboration via Zoom." For artists who are tasked with visualizing monsters, ghouls, occult rituals and gore scenes, nothing could be better than Lovecraft Country, and we are all hoping for another season or another VFX heavy show where we can utilize our talents.
