surround the use of magazines. To get Izzy's right, a graphic artist was put on for two weeks to create content, the Art Department worked on collages with scissors and tape, and one of the propmakers, whose daughter had passed away from cancer, donated her artwork for the walls. A writer who used to work for an edgy magazine since out of print obtained the rights to it for use on the walls, one of Lisa's buyers brought in her daughter's notebooks, and when it was time to get everything up, the showrunner Liz Tigelaar even came in to tape up pieces along with the crew. For Pearl's room, there is a story point that she only gets to paint one wall when they move into a new place because the sample size of paint is free. A piece of research was found that had paint strips taken from a hardware store in an ombre above a bed. The next version of the script had this written into a scene. Collaboration came from all ends to create a full version of the character. Outside of the character of each room, each of the permanent sets were reconceived for a flashback episode to the 190s. Rather than place the characters in entirely new sets, Elena is seen starting her family in the apartment Mia inhabits, and the Tudor is shown as it was when her parents lived there. This was an exciting changeover both from a logistics standpoint, construction coordinator Jeff Goyer was given four days to flip the sets, and from a character-driven standpoint. The Tudor got a '60s/'70s makeover, the concept being that Elena's parents had not updated the house to current-day standards. This allowed for a dramatic conversion that included custom plaid wallpaper, custom drapery, and the scenic feat by paint foreman Mark Maloof of wood graining all of the kitchen cabinetry in two days. The apartment showed Elena as a young woman with less rigid standards for herself and her family, complete with an '0s suburban brass and pastel vibe. Mia's E F G H E. ELENA'S HOUSE KITCHEN 1980.
