14 I M PS E . O R G SYN C SOU N D I n film, when people walk, hopefully you won't hear it under their dialogue. But, no one walks silently. In Foley, all of the footsteps are recorded. The definition of Foley is Sound FX recorded live in sync with picture following a CUEING program. CUES define the action that will be performed, when the action begins and ends, and any additional information that may be needed. Cues are divided by two categories. One is FOOTSTEPS, the other is PROPS. FOOTSTEPS are defined by any human being upright in motion. Walking, running, skipping, hopping, jumping, are examples of some Footsteps. If a person starts to crawl or climb a ladder, it is no longer a Footstep. It is now a Prop. PROPS represents everything that is not a Footstep. CUEING Foley is crucial to the Foley stage. The Foley mixer needs to be able to record Foley in a fluid manner. All of the cueing must be as linear as possible. The process of CUEING is done in Pro Tools. The first step is to import Picture and Guide Track, make sure Timecode is printed on the Picture image, line up the 2 Pop, and make sure the Session is at the correct Frame Rate. Then add 16 mono tracks. All Foley is recorded in mono. Any stereo cue is recorded in mono twice, hence Multiple Mono. There is no true stereo recorded in Foley. The first eight tracks are for FOOTSTEPS. The second eight tracks are for PROPS. Each category will be numbered independently. Tracks in FOOTSTEPS are labeled as such in ALL CAPS. Why? Because it's hard to read cues in a dimly lit control room, on a dark Foley stage, and a dimly lit Dub stage.
