Let Them Eat Lamb THE COUNTRY COMES TO LOS ANGELES AT PEASANT WINE BISTRO PHOTO: ERICA BARTEL W Chef Marcel Vinson's slow oven–braised lamb shank. 108 / the tasting panel / may 2013 ith deliciously rustic menu items such as warm mushroom salad, slow oven– braised lamb shank and coq au vin, it's easy to see why Greg Woodbury decided to name his Tarzana, CA wine bistro Peasant. The stunning décor, complete with vintage French doors as tables, wooden plank-covered walls and a polished cement bar top, only perfects the countryside atmosphere. Woodbury opened his restaurant with the hope of creating an inviting environment where his patrons could feel free to relax, enjoy their food and try new wines. Chef Marcel Vinson worked with Woodbury to create an authentic menu focusing on pastoral French and Italian recipes that offer beautiful pairings with many of the wines on the menu. However, don't think that means you'll get away with ordering "the usual." "Customers with an open mind and an adventurous spirit are always my favorite," says Woodbury. So in the chaos of opening a new restaurant, where did Woodbury focus most of his energy? Well, everywhere. "I have five goals for every customer that comes through those doors," explains Woodbury. "I want them to have outstanding service; they should be offered an eclectic wine list; the food to always be of high quality; I want to challenge people to experiment; and I want for them to just thoroughly enjoy their experience." —Breanne DeMore PHOTO: ERICA BARTEL ON THE THIRTY PUTS THE GOLDEN STATE IN THE SPOTLIGHT
