24 The Costume Designer Spring 2020 Laura Jean Shannon T here are two kinds of dream jobs. The first type are those high-profile, high-prestige gigs that make a career. The much anticipated, big breakthrough moments are a kind of Hollywood legend. In reality, such fabled jobs are few and far between, if they really exist at all. When looked at objectively, "big breaks" are almost always the result of many years of unrecognized sweat and rigorous effort, and given all the benefits of hindsight. The other kind of dream job is one that you love for its own sake because it fits you like a glove. In speaking to members of her crew, it is obvious that they love working with Laura Jean Shannon. That's the case because Shannon herself is clearly doing her dream job, and for her that's about conjuring other people's dreams both on and off screen.
