12 The Costume Designer Spring 2020 Dear Members and Friends, I am writing this from my temporary office, the dining table in my home. It is the middle of the seventh week of the stay-at-home order here in California. The world we work and live in has been dramatically altered. Our Local, along with Local 705, has been busy producing cloth masks and as of this writing, we have made and distributed over 34,000 masks. We have also begun production of surgical grade masks for UCLA and have delivered close to 1,500 of those masks to hospitals. I am so proud of the efforts of our two Locals, along with Local 44 who produced thousands of face shields. It is truly amazing to see the willingness of members to donate their time and talent to help in this time of crisis. We could not have done this without the generous donations of fabric, elastic, thread, and other supplies. All masks were donated at no cost to nursing homes, homeless shelters, hospitals, nurses unions, dock workers, Native American groups, to the homeless on skid row, and many others. As the country slowly begins to loosen restrictions, we as an industry are looking at all the ways to revamp our procedures so that we may continue to make entertainment for the world at large while still keeping our valuable workforce safe and strong. As we move from the health impact, into the fiscal impact our unions are committed to helping our members in any way we can. This has been a time like no other for me and the office staff. We continue to work hard from home to help our members through this crisis. We send our condolences to all the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones during this battle. Our thoughts are with you. Stay safe and healthy and take care of one another. In solidarity, Rachael Stanley rstanley@cdgia.com EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR UNION LABEL
