Association Governance SPRING 2020 | ADVOCATE 13 2020 Proposed Bylaws Amendment To Amend the AEA Bylaws as follows: Article I, Section 6-K k. The Delegate Assembly shall establish and hereby does establish a permanent annual assessment, to be known as the Every Member Option, in the amount of $12.00 $24.00. This amount shall be for all active-certified and active- educational support members working one-half time or more. AEA Retired members and Those active-certified and active-educational support professional members working less than one-half time shall have an Every Member Option rate of $6.00 $12.00. All affected members shall have the option to opt out of paying the assessment at the beginning of each membership year. Monies collected through the Every Member Option assessment shall be divided $5.00 for AEA Foundation for Teaching & Learning, $4.00 for the AEA Fund for Public Education, and $3.00 $15.00 for the AEA Education Improvement AND DEFENSE Fund. Monies collected through the Every Member Option assessment for those members paying the $6.00 $12.00 amount shall be divided $2.50 for AEA Foundation for Teaching & Learning, $2.00 for the AEA Fund for Public Education, and $1.50 $7.50 for the AEA Education Improvement AND DEFENSE Fund. Rationale An increased investment in an Education Improvement and Defense Fund will help AEA push back against attacks on our public schools while advancing union-led reform in Arizona. Existing Board policy should be revised to include lawsuits of significant, statewide impact and other state or local emergencies into its purpose. AEA Delegate Assembly Postponed The AEA Board of Directors voted on March 28, 2020 to postpone the Delegate Assembly scheduled for May 8-9, 2020 to a date yet to be determined and called for an election to begin on May 15, 2020 for the Board of Directors, a Bylaw Amendment and the AEA Fund Council. Region 6 Alternate Director Carlos "Chico" Robinson My name is Carlos "Chico" Robinson and I want to represent you on the AEA Board of Directors. I grew up in a family of educators and understood from an early age the value of public education as the foundation for the success of a community. As a teacher in Arizona, I saw the challenges my students faced in the classroom and began working to improve things in my own school, but soon realized that changes needed to be much more comprehensive if they were going to make a lasting difference. Like so many educators, I was inspired by the groundswell of activism in the Red for Ed movement and the strides that were made through the strength and will of the people. I see the role of AEA as the voice of educators who seek progressive change for those without a voice, our students. AEA is the tool to harness the power of the collective community of educators and supporters to influence the future for the children of Arizona. My leadership experience in education includes serving as a local president, spearheading site level activism, and participation in Minority Leadership conference, Delegate Assembly, and Teacher Leaders conference.
