95 / SAG-AFTRA SPECIAL ISSUE 2020 / sagaftra.org STAN AFTER OLLIE I n late 2018, beloved film comic legends Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy returned to the big screen, portrayed by Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly, in the biopic Stan & Ollie. As Laurel and Hardy, the duo worked as an onscreen team in shorts and feature films released from 1927–1951. They made a spectacularly successful transition from silent film to "talkies" and are today considered perhaps the greatest comedy duo in film history. Laurel outlived Hardy by seven and a half years, but even after Hardy's passing, Laurel continued to write sketches for them as if his onscreen partner was not truly gone. Laurel became the second recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. SAG's 2nd VP, film star Charlton Heston, reported to the Guild's board of directors that the "SAG Annual Award Committee … wished to recommend that the 1963 award SNAPSHOT Screen Actors Guild President Dana Andrews presents Stan Laurel with the second Life Achievement Award at his home in the Oceana Apartment Hotel in Santa Monica in 1963.
