39 / SAG-AFTRA SPECIAL ISSUE 2020 / sagaftra.org T he idea for an awards presentation to celebrate outstanding performances in television and film, as chosen by actors' peers, officially began in 1993, when the SAG National Board (pre-merger with AFTRA) authorized the formation of the Screen Actors Guild Awards Committee. Fifteen months later, in 1995, Angela Lansbury kicked off the first televised ceremony dedicated exclusively to honoring performers. In 2019, the SAG Awards marked its silver anniversary and, as seen on these pages, SAG-AFTRA members celebrated in style. As we enter the Awards' second quarter century, hundreds of performances have been honored and the annual occasion has become a worldwide must-see event. Remember, as a union member, you have the power to choose which performances are honored. Be sure to vote by Jan. 17 and then tune in Jan. 19 to find out who goes home with The Actor ® !
