Joe Alves started his movie career at the age of 19 at Walt Disney Studios as an assistant animator, drawing the "id" in Forbidden Planet and the thorns in Sleeping Beauty. As his career continued, Joe became an Art Director, working on many television movies and shows, including Rod Serling's Night Gallery. He went on to become a top Production Designer, creating the look of Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Escape From New York, Jaws 2, Geronimo, Freejack and Fire Down Below. He has been nominated for two Academy Awards (Special Eff ects for Jaws; Production Design for Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and won the British BAFTA award for Close Encounters. During his career, he was fortunate to work with Alfred Hitchcock and designed Steven Spielberg's fi rst three fi lms. After retiring from directing and Production Design in 2000, he has continued to be sought out to attend fi lm conventions, as well as lectures at fi lm studies events. A. JOE ALVES. B.
