There was much disbelief as I indicated, "The wives will be sitting here" and pointed to a pile of old mattresses. Location transformations were a large part of the job, but there was also much studio work to be done. It took a while to convince Marty that certain sets should be built. He thought that it would be hard to recreate the feeling of an Italian restaurant that had been in business for forty years. "You can smell decades of tomato sauce in the fl oorboards," he said. There were to be seven or more days of fi lming in the scripted Villa di Roma. Closing down a functioning restaurant, bringing it into the 1950s and then turning it back was not an option. It was one of the times that I managed to work my Italian mother from South Philadelphia into the conversation. We have joked that my mother B C functioned as my Italian passport to working with Scorsese. I was proud of Pat Sprott and the scenic team as I pointed out that they had simulated the look of dust trapped in accumulated grease on all of the air registers. This restaurant would not be receiving a health grade of A. The crew made sure the tile fl oor was cracked and broken, and that the acoustical ceiling tiles were crooked. I understood that Marty really knew what a place like this would look like. I concentrated on every detail, even cutting a hole in the back of a banquette so it could have a huge drainpipe going through it. I held my breath...but Marty gave a thumbs up. He was even more pleased when he found that Regina Graves and her decorating team managed to borrow the actual statue carried in the San Gennaro Festival for the window of the Andrea Doria Club location.
