8 • LMGI COMPASS | Fall 2019 CONTRIBUTORS Paul Messana Paul fi rst became interested in location scouting while he was an undergrad at Pitzer College. Upon graduation, Paul worked under Joan Aguado at the South Pasadena Film Offi ce of his hometown and through that position, he was introduced to location managers and more opportunities in the fi eld. He has since worked as an ALM on Modern Family, All Rise and The Kenan Show, and now currently works as a key assistant location manager on NBC's This Is Us. The Directors Guild of Canada, British Columbia would like to congratulate OUTSTANDING LOCATIONS IN A PERIOD TELEVISION SERIES Mike Re Maryland-based fi lmmaker Mike Reft is an assistant location manager and new LMGI member. He has had the privilege of working with some of the best professionals in our industry and looks forward to continuing that standard of excellence. With past experience in just about every department, he is proud to call the Location Department home. Mike's credits include House of Cards: Seasons 5 & 6, Wonder Woman (1984) and Top Gun: Maverick. John Rakich Toronto, Canada-based location manager John Rakich/LMGI was the fi rst location professional from that city to join the LMGI in 2015. His many credits include the feature fi lms Resident Evil 4, Pixels and the TV series Hemlock Grove, American Gods and Shadowhunters. When not working, John enjoys exploring Canada's U.S. neighbor via road trips. Architecture and great food always factor into planning his destinations. Jill Naumann Los Angeles native Jill Naumann considers fi lmmaking to be an integral part of her cultural heritage. Training on the streets of LA during the '90s fi lming boom, Naumann worked with directors such as Ron Howard, Mick Jackson and William Friedkin. In 2003, she received a COLA Award for Location Professional of the Year – Television for 44 Minutes: The North Hollywood Shoot-Out. In 2013, she was honored with a second COLA for the Best Reality Series Top Hooker. Her photography has been showcased in AFCI's Locations Magazine and many California county brochures distributed by tourism Boards. In her downtime, she enjoys using multi-sport vacations to scout California's small towns, and donates her time on the festival circuit to promote fi lming. Judy Schultz A marketing major interested in fi lm, Judy created her own internship with the Connecticut State Film Offi ce, where she was introduced to the production industry. After 11 years freelancing as a location scout/assistant (Message in a Bottle, ESPN, Judging Amy, Gilmore Girls), script supervisor (Martha Stewart Living, Dick Wolf Prods), production coordinator (Rescue 911, America's Most Wanted) and AD (Discovery Channel), Judy became the project manager for the CT Film Offi ce, where she always hoped to return. Judy was then recruited to open a fi lm offi ce in Sedona, Arizona, which she successfully operated as director for three years while completing several master classes as a member of AFCI. A former fi tness instructor, Judy enjoys working out & time outdoors, as well as reading and writing. After a hiatus to take care of family members, Judy is exploring fresh opportunities in the industry that will utilize her production, marketing and administrative skills while volunteering with the LMGI. Lori Balton Grateful to have a job that lets her explore the world, Lori Balton/LMGI is the fi rst location professional accepted into the Academy. She has been lucky to work with some of the best directors, designers and location managers in the business. Co-editor of the LMGI Compass magazine, founding member and past president of the LMGI, she is delighted to see the Guild thrive.
