4 • THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2019 " It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit." –Harry Truman People do not always remember everyone they have worked with or even the names of all the projects they worked on, but I will almost guarantee they do remember when they were a part of something special. There is always that one show, project or life event when you were on set, location or involved with some sort of group effort and felt what is always described as "the magic." There are movies, theater presentations and TV shows that we sometimes are involved with for only a brief amount of time, yet we get to see the characters created to go on and live forever. Some of us have been lucky enough to be a part of a movement such as working or volunteering to help pass legislation such as the tax incentives or donate time to help with any multitude of charitable organizations outside of labor from "Stand Up to Cancer" to the ASPCA. That is the same magic we feel or experience when we have made a difference and achieved something. It is the same magic when we work hard individually and as a team member and overcome obstacles and end up with a finished product to be proud of. Whether each individual has helped advance labor, tended to the less fortunate or helped people laugh and cry from the magic of movies and television, the common denominator is in order to achieve any of these things you don't do it alone. You may work with some people you know and sometimes work with complete strangers. For the 2020 MUAHS Guild Awards, we have a group of Lifetime Achievement nominees who have accomplished many things that they have received credit for and things they may not have received enough credit for. As we have been researching and learning about each of this year's 10 nominees, it has become apparent it is not just about their incredible work as make-up artists and hair stylists. Their work alone would be enough to garner them this award, but it is also about so much more. Each of them has a unique background and they have all in their own way given a lot back to the arts, the members, the Local and their community. Within these pages, there are bios and pictures of some work they have done during their illustrious careers but what is on those pages is only a beginning of who these artists are and what they have done in their careers. I encourage all our members who know and have worked with these oftentimes humble and extraordinarily talented nominees to share information with those members who have not had the same opportunity. The quote on top of this column says it all. When looking at the accomplishments of many people, especially in our business, it is always the most talented and the ones who give the most who rarely take it upon themselves to take the credit. Now is a time to celebrate all of their success and perhaps the time to give credit to them for all they have accomplished and additionally, the success they have in turn given to many other of their brothers and sisters who are carrying on the legacies and following in their footsteps. Congratulations Christina Smith, Josse Normand, Judy Crown, Martin Samuel, Matthew Mungle, Maurice Stein, Terry Baliel, Tom Burman, Tommy Cole and Toni-Ann Walker, and well deserved.
