Showrunner Chris Mundy and director/executive producer Jason Bateman informed us that the season two story arc was going to be the Byrdes overcoming huge obstacles as they strive to get a riverboat casino approved. An open casino, able to wash large quantities of the cartel's money, would literally save their lives.
