The story is about a southern African-American who suffers abuse from others over four decades and her struggle for identity. The film was released in 1985 and was the first film for both Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. The film was the first PG-13 rated film to be nominated for an Oscar. It had eleven Academy Award nominations, including Best Art Direction (J. Michael Riva, Production Designer, and Bo Welch, Art Director), but the film did not receive any wins. A.
