30 • LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2019 IN MY CITY: HONOLULU Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, The Descendants, Avatar, Tropic Thunder and Raiders of the Lost Ark have shot on Kauai. Molokai island and Lanai island are a part of Maui county. Maui is the vacation island, beautiful beaches, clear water, towering mountains, 10,000-ft extinct volcano, beautiful resorts, expansive up-country ranches and vistas. Lush jungles on the infamous road to Hana. Maui has hosted the feature films Jurassic Park, The Hulk, Just Go With It and the TV series Baywatch. The Big Island, the largest and youngest island of the state, is still being formed by the active Kilauea volcano that recently destroyed some great locations and numer- ous homes, jungles, lava fields, two 13,000-ft-plus vol- canos, waterfalls, rivers, ranch lands and valleys, quaint towns, nice people, expansive vistas and dry desert looks. Hawaii productions have included the feature films Indi- ana Jones and the Crystal Skull and Waterworld. Stevie: WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE IN YOUR JOB? RS: Parking! RS: The new challenge is finding the owners of expensive and expansive properties ... and talking with someone who can actually say yes or no. The tech billionaires who often own the properties usually aren't interested in filming. Hawaii is turning into a 'land bank,' buy it and let it sit.
