orial The western slope of the Santa Lucia Mountains pro- vides a postcard landscape at DAOU Vineyards. Proprietor and winemaker Daniel Daou and his brother, Georges, produce noteworthy wines in Paso Robles. An Ethereal Chardonnay in Cab Country Although the wine is already sold out, we just had to report on the DAOU Vineyards 2008 Paso Robles Chardonnay (SRP $38). The Daous’ first vintage of this varietal proves what this Central Coast region—and the Daou winemaking tech- niques—are capable of: lemon chiffon unctuous- ness with a billowy texture like a weighty cloud of butterscotch pudding. A concentrated richness is the key to its future age-worthiness, while an underscored earthy, rustic, mineral quality makes you believe in the magic of this sunny clime. 96 points. june 2010 / the tasting panel / 79
