LMGI COMPASS | Spring 2019 • 13 in major film and television production. Special thanks to our stakeholders: the New York State Governor's Office of Motion Picture & Television Development; the NY/NJ Port Authority (Oculus, Liberty Park); Silverstein Properties (3 WTC, 4 WTC, 7 WTC); Durst (One WTC); Legends (One World Observatory); SNY Studios (4 WTC, 49th, 50th floors); and Westfield (Oculus retail and plaza). Seeing Red: The Handmaids Go to Washington Washington, DC, is one of the most popular background locations in the world. From love scenes to chase scenes and political pondering, it's all been filmed in DC. But never had a scene with 200 handmaids, all cloaked in red capes and white wings been shot on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The visually stunning sight of the red costumes against the stark white marble left those who happened upon the location awestruck and wondering if the scene was part of a real political protest or something that was being filmed for television. It took a small army of production professionals marshaled by DC-based location manager Carol Flaisher, LMGI, along with the support of the National Park Service, who worked with the team on schedules and weather contingencies, all while contending with the government shutdown to reach this powerful moment. The biggest challenge was filming at a location visited by millions of people each year and to keep it open during filming, as required by the Park Service. With careful management and the cooperation of the public, the team was able to fulfill their requirement and get their day. The other challenge was ensuring that the fans and media who came to the site, once word was out, were treated with respect and had a positive experience. The actors, including Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski and Joseph Fiennes, embraced the fans and interacted with them during breaks in shooting. The fans showed their appreciation by standing quietly and watching the filming until "cut" was called and then they erupted into applause.
