Veronica - Blue Veronica's blue living room, dining room and kitchen were designed to appear classic contemporary but with an icy, oceanic feel. The living room resonates with Veronica's inky and mysterious bedroom, which was decorated with bizarre sea creatures and other curiosities. Like Veronica, the room appears at first glance, a fairly typical if slightly more sophisticated space. On closer look, however, the room reveals a deeper, creepier element. To complete the layered, unsettling effect, I asked Christina and Kellie to include hand-drawn sketches of spiders and dolls cradling their own heads. JD JD's house was designed in a style best described as mid-century dojo meets American Psycho. In the pilot, a young JD is seen witnessing his mother burning down their house and committing suicide. With this in mind, I designed a large wall in JD's living room using 1x6 Shou Sugi Ban cypress. This is a Japanese technique of burning the wood until it is black and crackly and then finishing it with a clear coat. Kellie completed the look with D E A. The effect: a bachelor's den of quiet horrors. Cracking the overall feel of JD's home helped establish the tone for the rest of the sets that followed. Working as the Graphic Designer on Heathers meant delivering on a ceaseless list of demands under severe time constraints, maintaining scrupulous attention to detail and bringing forth an amazing amount of creativity. Christina designed an ungodly number of original graphics, including custom wallpapers, original artwork for sets, signage, school-appropriate flyers, posters and banners, as well as original neon signs, lots of neon signs. What sets Christina apart from a lot of Graphic Designers is her willingness to step away from the computer to get out a pencil and start sketching ideas. The volume and breadth of work she contributed to Heathers was similar to what you would expect on a sci-fi or period show. Nearly every graphic element was custom designed, resulting in an insular and intentionally claustrophobic atmosphere. F
