28 • LMGI COMPASS | Fall 2018 MUST-SEE PLACE: The OKC National Memorial & Museum, which honors the victims, survivors, rescuers and everyone affected by the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. The rows of empty chairs elicit raw emotion. It is a very special site. I also love the Myriad Botanical Gardens, a 17-acre interactive urban park that holds cultural events, including weddings. Filming is allowed at both of these places. These locations are at the heart and center of our city and show the true resilience of our citizens to rebound from tragedy and create something beautiful. FAVORITE SHOP: CK and Company. I love the labels and line of clothing that CK has in-store. Good mix of trendy and classic. FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Michael's Grill. The atmosphere is elegant and quiet in a small and intimate setting. The best food in OKC with a mix of American, Lebanese and French fusion. PLACE TO SEE BY NIGHT: Bricktown District. Just a short walk from downtown hotels, event venues and attractions, this former warehouse district is filled with restaurants, nightlife and entertainment options. From taking a cruise along the Bricktown Canal to catching an Oklahoma City Dodgers game at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, Bricktown is a favorite destination for visitors and locals alike. BEST DAY TRIP: OU football on game days! FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD: Plaza District, Paseo District and Deep Deuce. The Plaza District is hip and hap- pening, an enclave of locally owned shops, neighborhood bars, quirky galleries and fun-and-funky restaurants. Named for the historic Plaza Theatre, the area has become a hub for creativity and a magnet for local businesses. Its namesake theater is now the nationally renowned Lyric on the Plaza Theatre, where you can catch live performances in season. Paseo is known for its eclectic art galleries (many attached to working artists' studios) and shops, as well as its distinctive Spanish Revival architecture, the Paseo Arts District has a bohemian vibe that's great for exploring on foot. Situated around a curvy, tree-lined street, Paseo is home to more than 80 artists, plus shops, bars and restaurants and hosts a great monthly art walk. The Deep Deuce District was the heart of Oklahoma City's African-American neighborhood in the 1920s and '30s, and during that time, the district was known for its incredible jazz music. Today, Deep Deuce is a popular urban housing location and has several neighborhood hangouts like STAG Lounge, a whiskey club offering more than 250 bottles of whiskey and almost 400 spirits. FAVORITE LOCAL ARTIST: Desmond Mason, former NBA basketball player. Mixed media, street art and a lot of heart! Desmond's talent in his art represents his love and commitment to the community. BEST BAR/CLUB: R&J Lounge and Supper Club is an ode to classic cool capturing the spirit of the old-school cocktail lounge, with food that's a tribute to the mid-century American supper club. Edna's Bar, a raucous neighborhood watering hole known for a beer-based cocktail, plus snacks, pool & a jukebox. Cock O'the Walk is also a lot of fun. A dive bar, it's smoky, the regulars are loud. Stiff drinks, cold beer, pool, darts and lots of televisions with all sports all the time. People come here to catch a game or unwind after work. Blue- and white-collar folks welcome. BEST PLACE TO HEAR MUSIC: Jones Assembly & the Tower Theatre. The Jones Assembly has live music, plus regional American fare & craft cocktails in a spacious, industrial-chic venue. From national recording artists like Willie Nelson to their weekly house music, the Jones Assembly is always jumping. The Tower Theatre brings live music and movies to the heart of Oklahoma City. It's a fully restored, original theater with main floor terraces and a permanently seated balcony which is popular for event and gallery space, cozy concert spots album release shows, photo shoots, comedy shows, exhibits and other smaller events. BEST VANTAGE POINT/SCENIC VIEW: "O Bar" at the Ambassador Hotel, Midtown. It has a great OKC skyline view! I love the indoor/outdoor rooftop atmosphere—a great drink menu and light snacks!
