PAT R O N S | FA L L 2 0 1 8 13 E V E RY D O N AT I O N C O U N T S BURN UNIT PLAYROOM GETS FRESH, NEW LOOK The Mastery in Transformation Training (MITT) leadership program co hort, a workshop in which participants are encouraged to "be the change they want to see," decided fundraising for the Torrance Memorial burn unit would be that change. In May their mission began. In less than three weeks they collected more than $17,000 through initiatives such as a dating auction, BBQ, poker tournament and Tarot card read- ings. They also created a GoFundMe. The group learned from staff what items might be needed. Funds raised were used to purchase toys, blankets, backpacks and books for pediatric patients, as well as gift cards for after-care and hotels for remote families. The cohort also purchased three iPad Pros and sponsored four families to visit Disneyland. Some of the funds raised were used to paint the walls of the playroom and add storage cubbies and jungle-themed stickers. In June MITT hosted a brunch for the nurses of the burn unit and presented patients with the new items. GROUP HOPES SMALL CHANGE WILL BRING BIG CHANGE Patients in the pediatric unit playroom are enjoying a new train table thanks to the work of More Sensible, an entrepreneurial mentor group for high schoolers. The group collected funds for the donation through its most recent brainchild, the "A Million Pennies Project (AMP)." AMP evolved from simply collecting pennies from friends and family into a focused and detailed operation. The group has placed collec tion canisters in local businesses, hosted 10K penny-a-thons and started a website for supporters to make pledges. The group itself has evolved from four members to a 25-member organization. After experiencing hospitalization themselves, the original mem- bers believed donating to the pediatric unit would be a great way to give back using the pennies raised. So far the students have collected nearly 100,000 pennies. More Sensible presents funds raised through the "A Millions Pennies Project" for the pediatric playroom.
