Summer 2018
MUST-SEE PLACE:
Praia do Arpoador is one
the most beautiful urban
beaches out there. It is the
birthplace of surfing in Rio,
way back then. It is also
my birthplace and where I
grew up. It is my place. I
am a local hero there.
FAVORITE SHOP:
Hering Store is a Brazil-
ian clothing brand with several stores
throughout town. They sell the basics
with high quality and no labels.
FAVORITE RESTAURANT:
Azumi Restaurante. Azumi is a simple,
small, traditional Japanese restaurant. It
does not have a view, but it has private
chambers and a basement. It is not at all
fancy, but has the best Japanese food I
know.
PLACE TO SEE BY NIGHT:
Lapa is a very well-known neighborhood in
downtown Rio, famous for its aqueduct, Os
Arcos da Lapa. Considered the birthplace of
samba, the traditional popular music from
Rio, Lapa has several samba clubs near each
other all offering great music and food, as
well as great ambiance.
BEST DAY TRIP:
As a surfer, my best day trip is to
Saquarema which is a small town
about a 1½-hour drive from Rio.
The main beach is called Itauna,
and it is where the WSL (World
Surf League) holds its tournament
in Brazil. Beautiful scenery and the
best waves in Brazil!
FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD:
Ipanema is both the beach and the
residential neighborhood where it
is located in Rio's South Zone. It's
where you will find the best hotels,
the finest restaurants and fancy
shopping in Rio. It has a great
nightlife and you can feel the real
Rio lifestyle. We also shoot quite
often in Ipanema.
FAVORITE LOCAL ARTIST:
Joao Gilberto, worldwide famous
musician, and one of the creators
of the bossa nova.
BEST BAR/CLUB:
Bar da Laje is a hip place located
in the Vidigal favela. It has good
ambiance, beautiful people, good
music and drinks and an amazing
view of Rio. There you will find the
average person that lives in Rio.
BEST PLACE TO HEAR MUSIC:
Bares da Lapa. Lapa is home to
several nightclubs and music plac-
es, very popular and close togeth-
er, where you will hear the best of
samba and "chorinho," traditional
music styles from Rio. It gets really
crowded with young people, uni-
versity students, etc., all week long.
BEST VANTAGE POINT/SCENIC VIEW:
The colossal Cristo Redentor.
The 26-feet (eight metres) high,
world-famous art deco statue of
Christ the Redeemer is located at
the summit of Mount Corcovado.
One of Rio's most iconic landmarks
and a popular tourist attraction,
it was created by French sculptor
Paul Landowski and built by the
Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva
Costa, in collaboration with the
French engineer Albert Caquot.
