in which the stories exist. This juxtaposition gives the Art Department great opportunities to explore dark comic book themes. When one of the characters is killed in the line of duty, the show's hero, Agent Coulson, must go to the family's home and deliver the news. It's an otherwise typical house, but the moment becomes sad and poignant as the camera holds on the lone figure waiting at the front door framed in a dark hallway. ANCIENT UNDERGROUND FORT A story arc had the show's team of secret agents digging below an ancient underground fort in Puerto Rico. The surface scenes were shot in Puerto Rico and the underground scenes were shot on a stage set built on a four-foot tall steel deck. Several characters descend and then fall into a hole they've dug, so the deck was necessary for stunt safety. The concept behind this set was it had been built in the 1500s, altered over time as a defense fortress and then abandoned. Vacuform brick and stone were put together like a patchwork quilt and covered with "lost-&-found" plasterwork. The floor was fiberglass Spanish tile, which was backed with sand to create a soft, stunt-friendly surface. Only three sizes of arches were built, but they are arranged at uneven angles to create a maze feeling and convey the sense of an old and utilitarian structure. A C B
