B L A C K - I S H | P E R S P E C T I V E 6 5 C Junior, with doodles and phrases referencing his thoughts and activities in the particular episode. What started out as a cool way to express Junior's feelings and hide a few storyline surprises in plain sight, soon became a mad dash for me and my lead painter, Luke Dean. Whenever I'd open a new script and see Junior's room on the set list, I'd think, "…uh oh, more images and words!" The wall became a mash-up of to-do lists, monsters, science, animals, seasonal holidays and random weirdness. My new note to self: don't create a feature wall in a permanent set that needs to be changed (almost) every episode! Then there are the twins, Jack and Diane, completely different in every way. Jack is happy- go-lucky, popular and energetic. Diane is cool and calculating, with a slightly diabolical edge. These two sharing a room called for a blending of opposites. In a classic take on sibling rivalry, I decided to divide the room in two visually. The trick was to see the halves side by side, distinct but balanced. I split their headboard wall with two different wallpapers. He had a graphic pattern of small robots, while her paper featured pink and orange flowers. Small hints of similar colors helped the whole palette hang together. The off- white tone of his robots was the background color of her paper. The chartreuse green of her flower petals was the background color of his paper. Scale change, with a few similar colors, is a good way to help disparate patterns coordinate. I followed these same guidelines for their room update. There was a plot point that their sister Zoey was in charge of redecorating the room on a very limited budget.
