I was hired in mid-March 2016 for a June 10 start of principal photography—an ambitious schedule driven by the need to meet a February 2017 release date. Essentially, this would be only a 10-month journey from prep-to-shoot-to-post-to-release…a window of time that many feature projects reserve for post production alone. Money was not going to be the answer to the lack of time. Instead, this was one of those professional growth opportunities when I had to convince myself that it is "creatively freeing" to not have to worry about money…because I didn't have much. If success is a stool held up by the three essential legs of time, money and people, this journey would instead be an exercise in spinning a plate on a single stick. And if I had to choose just one stick for spinning, I would choose people! To my early dismay, though, I found that the once deep LA crew base had been scattered across the country (and the world) after years of industry migration. So building the team that would build the film took an excruciatingly long time, and it consumed some precious early days of preproduction. It was time that paid off though! I B C D E
