Spring 2018 | wyoea.org 8 The Student Wyoming Education Association (SWEA) is a local of the Wyoming Education Association with a desire to fulfill the National Education Association's goals, visions, and requirements. Our main goal is to provide our student educators with the three Ps: Professional Development, Political Action, and Public Service. At the University of Wyoming SWEA chapter, our three Ps direct our visions and the projects we do within our organization. The first P, Professional Development, is achieved every meeting. There are many professional development opportunities for our educators, covering topics such as resume building, classroom management strategies, student teaching survival, interview tips, and many other skills our future educators will need. The second P, Political Action, is addressed with visits from Wyoming legislators, who update and inform us on the current standings of education legislation. The third P, Public Service, is our favorite mission because we get to give back to the community. These three Ps guide our activities and help us develop into outstanding educators. This semester we have many projects to serve our community. Many of our members read to the UW Lab School students for Dr. Seuss' birthday during March. We are also planning to create our own Relay for Life team, host a Parents' Literacy Night Out, and do many fundraising events at our own local restaurants in Laramie. In the future, we hope to continue providing professional development opportunities along with legislative knowledge to our members in order for them to grow as educators. Within the WEA come many great benefits to further our members' development; therefore, we hope to give back to them and continue utilizing their amazing service. We continue looking ahead into another great year with outstanding members, goals, visions, and services. SWEA News John Trohkimoinen of Casper was presented with the prestigious Award for Teaching Excellence from the National Foundation for the Improvement of Education this year. The program recognizes educators from around the country who shine in their schools, their communities, and their own learning.
