Teacher Opportunities 2012 seaworld/busCh gardens environmenTal exCellenCe awards The 2012 SeaWorld/Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards recognize the outstanding efforts of students and teach- ers across the country who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment. Pbs learningmedia/The henrY ford PBS Teacher Innovator Awards recognize innovative PreK-12 classroom educators, me- dia specialists, technology coordinators, and homeschool educators who use digital media to enhance student learning. Entrants submit a short video or PDF with text and images that showcases their work. Entries can be a dem- onstration of a unique teaching technique or the outcome of influence on a student work. Winners will receive an all-paid, week-long "Innovation Immersion Experience" at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan in August 2013 and a free professional development from PBS TeacherLine. PreK-12 classroom educa- tors (public, private, or charter school), library media specialists, technology specialists/coordi- nators, homeschool educators, and Head Start or licensed daycare teachers are eligible for this award. ChrisToPher Columbus awards The Christopher Columbus Awards is a na- tional, community-based STEM competition for middle school students and teachers looking to make a difference in their community. Working in teams, students identify a problem in the community and apply the scientific method to create an innovative solution. Winners will re- ceive a $25,000 grant. Schools (grades 6-8) and community groups are eligible. The deadline is February 4, 2013. For more information, visit www.christophercolumbusawards.com. nsTa: sYlvia shugrue award for elemenTarY sChool TeaChers The National Science Teachers Association Sylvia Shugrue Award honors one elemen- tary school teacher who has established (or is establishing) an interdisciplinary, inquiry-based lesson plan. The lesson plan will fully refer- ence sources of information and any relevant National Science Education Standards and benchmarks found in the Atlas of Science Literacy. Simmons Memorial Award for New Teachers provides selected K–12 teachers in their first five years of teach- ing with funds to attend the annual National Conference on Science Education. Award recipients will be mentored, tracked, and provided with continuing opportunities for meaningful involvement with NSTA and its activities. The deadline is November 30, 2012.
