www.postmagazine.com 7 POST FEBRUARY 2018 BITS & PIECES LONDON — At BSC Expo 2018 in London, Panavision (www.panav- ision.com) introduced the new Millennium DXL2 8K camera. The large-format camera is the heart of a complete imaging ecosystem designed from filmmakers' perspec- tives, incorporating Panavision's optics and camera architecture, the Red Monstro 8K VV sensor, and Light Iron color2 science (LiColor2). The DXL2 builds on the success of Panavision's Millennium DXL and benefits from the company's part- nerships with cinematographers, whose real-world experience and input are manifested in the DXL2's many advances. "The Millennium DXL2 8K camera system was conceived with the goal of maximum creative control from the moment of capture through delivery and display," says Michael Cioni, senior VP of innovation at Panavision and Light Iron. "Panavision's vast inven- tory of advanced large-format and anamorphic optics combined with Red's Monstro imager expands what's possible, allowing filmmakers to cre- ate radically inventive and powerfully cinematic images, customized for the needs of the project and the vision of creative teams." Panavision is a camera and lens manufacturer that also serves film- makers as a trusted rental house. Since its introduction, the DXL has been used on over 20 feature films, and numerous television shows, commercials and music videos. Oscar nominee John Schwartzman, ASC, who photographed two features on the DXL, is among those who have tested the DXL2. "When you take an 8K image and super-sample it, it only gets better," says Schwartzman. "It's absolute- ly beautiful to look at. For me, the Millennium DXL2 is a no-brainer. It's something I would use on anything. It does it all. And in fact, I'm current- ly planning to shoot my next feature with it." The Monstro 8K VV sensor offers 16-plus stops of dynamic range with improvements in image quality and shadow detail, a native ISO setting of 1600, and ProRes 4K up to 60fps. Images are presented on the camera in log format using Light Iron color science. An integrated PX-Pro color spectrum filter, custom-made for the DXL, offers a significant increase in color separation and dramatically higher color precision to the image. New to the DXL2, LiColor2 streamlines the 8K pipeline, smooth- ly handling the workflow and offer- ing convenient and quick access to high-quality RAW images, accom- modating direct to edit without delays. "We are proud to provide an eco- system of tools that gives filmmakers more choices to express their vision," adds Panavision CEO and president Kim Snyder. "We have been listening to feedback from cinematographers and the results of our collaboration are directly manifested in the DXL2. We remain committed to continuous technological development and are excited to bring this new camera to market." NEW YORK CITY — Boutique post production studio The Underground (http://theundergroundny.com) has launched in Manhattan, led by creative director Nic Seresin and executive producer Yvonne Apollonio. The studio specializes in 2D and 3D VFX, color grading, on-set supervision, edi- torial and design for commercials and branded content. The Underground embraces a lean and adaptive business model, working with a curated lineup of freelance talent to scale their team for projects of all scopes and sizes. Their bou- tique approach allows them to keep artistry front-of-mind. Upcoming work includes projects for Lifetime and American Express. "Nic Seresin is a very talented artist who has worked with some of the best directors in the world at the most prominent VFX houses in Europe and the US," says Apollonio. "I admire his ability and technique, and I also enjoy his easy-going na- ture and great sense of humor." "It's exciting to be a part of a boutique shop that allows me to have creative collaboration across many fields, from edit to VFX, finishing and everything in between," adds Seresin. "We are small and nimble with big ambitions to do truly amazing work across all aspects of VFX." As creative director, Seresin will oversee the creative vision for The Underground and serve as the lead artist, working directly with clients to bring their visions to life. He spent 20 years crafting dynamic visuals in advertising, film, music video and digital work. Originally from the UK, his family is steeped in the film and advertising world, luring him in at an early age. Seresin has worked at some of the industry's top shops in both London and New York, includ- ing The Mill, MPC, Method Studios, Quietman and Smoke & Mirrors. His work has earned numerous industry accolades. As a VFX su- pervisor and Flame artist, Seresin has collaborated with some of the industry's top commercial direc- tors, including Spike Lee, Tim Burton, Michel Gondry, Dougal Wilson, Rupert Sanders, Tony Kaye, Jonathan Glazer and Ulf Johansson, among numerous others. Apollonio brings over a decade of experience as a producer in the commercial production space to her role as executive producer at The Underground. Her dual back- grounds as a VFX artist and producer allow her to traverse creative and client perspectives. She started her career as a visual effects artist in Los Angeles. She continued to work freelance while she landed her first producing gig at The Famous Group. She made the move to New York City in 2014 and has since worked as a producer and sales rep for a number of production and post production shops, including Colorbox Productions, Basic Nature and Homestead Films. The Underground's parent compa- ny is P2P, a leading retouching com- pany with over 22 years of experience, specializing in top beauty brands, including L'Oreal, Revlon and L'Oreal Paris. The Underground recently signed with Minerva, made up of Mary Knox and Shauna Seresin, for East Coast sales representation.
