26 wholelifetimes.com art & soul MUSIC Black Coffee Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa L ike the ubiquitous drink it's named after, Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa's new album is a strong, satisfying stimulant. The blues artists follow-up their Grammy-nominated 2013 covers collaboration, Seesaw, with Black Coffee, a collection of 10 blistering soul classics that take full advantage of Hart's stirring vocals and Bonamassa's guitar virtuoso. Produced again by Seesaw's Kevin Shirley and recorded over fi ve days in Las Vegas, Black Coffee fi ttingly starts off with an energetic bang, as Hart, Bonamassa, and Lee Thornburg's horns tear through Edgar Winter's "Give It Everything You Got." After a full-throttle start that includes scorching takes on Etta James's "Damn Your Eyes" and Ike and Tina Turner's "Black Coffee," the duo takes it down a notch with Ella Fitzgerald's weepy "Lullaby of the Leaves." The party starts back up with a sultry take on the Peggy Lee classic "Why Don't You Do Right," then listeners are transported to a fi ery church service with Lavern Baker's (and Elvis Presley's) "Saved." Bonamassa shines on "Sitting on Top of the World," a slow- burn originally written by members of the Mississippi Sheiks almost a century ago. Hart's voice, reeking of righteous anger, returns to the forefront on "Joy," sung by legends like Lucinda Williams and Bettye LaVette. The transition to "Soul on Fire" is like a smooth light roast, with Hart singing Baker's siren song of love and devotion. The closing tune is an off-kilter choice chosen by Shirley – "Addicted," a 2007 cut from electronica-infl uenced Austrian artist Waldeck. The artists place a reggae-tinged sound on their version, proving that Hart, Bonamassa, and Shirley can master any genre with ease.
