Feeding more than minds FOLLOW US ON: see EDUCATOR on page 10 By Mike Wiser, mwiser@isea.org By Mike Wiser, mwiser@isea.org Finding your tribe New educators learn from some of the best in the business. Send home a weekly newsletter. Keep students busy. Document everything. Join your association. Be meticulous about maintaining student development notes. Trust yourself. You'll get a lot of advice during the first few years of your teaching career, practically all of it given with the best of intentions. But sometimes it pays to seek out the tips, tricks and processes to make the start of your career go smoothly from the best in the business. That idea is the kernel that started the Emerging Educators Conference, held in January at Simpson College. The Iowa State The line at the check-in counter of the Davenport Food Pantry snakes out the doors of the JB Young Center and into a chilly December night. There are teens with tattoos on their faces and elderly people who need aluminum walkers or scooters to get around. Some people are still in their retail uniforms and look like they just got off the job, others are bundled in layers of clothes with matted hair. It's a mishmash of races, genders, ages, heights and sizes. They have one thing in common; they need a little help today to get food tonight. The ISEA Community Outreach Grant program supports educators who make a difference in their communities. Hannah Cousins (left) pulls down a can of beans in chili sauce for a food pantry client while her father, Davenport Education Association member and Social Studies teacher Aaron Cousins looks on. The pantry is supported in part by the Davenport Education Association, which finds volunteers, and an Iowa State Education Association Community Grant that helps underwrite costs. Nielson and Robbins are both members of the West Des Moines Education Association. MIKE WISER/IOWA STATE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
