58 • THE ARTISAN WINTER 2018 Charles Mullen (1928-2017) Regional Make-up Artist Charles Mullen was a superbly talented make-up artist who was one of the original founding members of Local 706's Regional Membership in 1970. He spent most of his career at the San Francisco Opera (SFO) and worked on almost every opera at the War Memorial Opera House from the 1960s until his retirement in 2010. Charles was a very talented artist who loved working with opera singers. He was a huge opera fan and amassed an extensive collection of opera memorabilia. At one point during his long career, he broke away from SFO and traveled to New York to work as the head of make-up for the New York City Opera Company. When he was not working at the opera, Mullen was a huge football fan (especially San Francisco) and worked with CBS Sports in the early 1990s. He received his Gold Card in 2001, and retired in 2010 at the age of 83. Charles Mullen is survived by two brothers, John W. Mullen (of Washington) and Richard J. Mullen (of Redding, CA). He passed away from complications of cardio-pulmonary fail- ure and pneumonia. His caretakers have given no information regarding any services. In Memoriam Wedding in the Canyon Fellow Loal 706 member Sarah Ault married the love of her life, Tom Thiel, on January 3, 2018 in a very small ceremony in Topanga, California. EXTENDED FAMILY NEWS Knot Tied! Married on December 29, 2017, after 11 years together, Mary Mastro and Peter Tothpal made it official. John Norin (1944-2017) Journeyman Make-up Artist John Norin was a third-generation artisan whose grandfather Joseph was a founding member of IATSE Local 706, his father Gustaf was noted for his outstanding artistry and inven- tiveness with prosthetics and worked on Gone With the Wind. John learned the craft from his father and shined in his own right, leaving a legacy not only of beautiful artistry in feature films and television, but in service to the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild. John became a member of Local 706 in 1967 and became a journey- man in 1969. His career spanned film, television, commercials and live performance specials. Best known for his work on the feature film The Doors, TV series Cagney & Lacey, Foxy Brown, Aloha, Bobby and Rose, and dozens of movies-of-the-week and television series. His skills and artistry were extensive. Toward the end of his lengthy career, John became the last Warner Bros. Studio Department Head of Make-up and Hair Styling, overseeing hundreds of productions while he was there.
