However, how you choose to vote matters just as much. As DSEA members, how you and I vote has never mattered more. Public education is defined by laws, regulations, and policies established by both houses of the legislature and by the Governor. School funding is decided on by the folks we vote into public office; funding for things like class size, staffing, technology, capital improvements—what you and I call working conditions. In Delaware, major portions of school employee salaries are con- trolled by our state legislature. Our healthcare and pension bene- fits come from the State. Times are tough. However, throughout this reces- sion, we have been able to keep most of our folks on the job—where they are needed most—where they work together to make a difference for the suc- cess of Delaware students. In my mind, this is directly related to who is elected and to the kinds of relationships that can be forged among our educa- tion professionals and lawmakers across this state. Thanks for all you do and for voting on Nov. 6. #15 - Kathleen Cooke (D) Caesar Rodney, Capital, Lake Forest, Smyrna, Polytech Running against Dave Lawson (R), incumbent; and Catherine Samardza (IND) Cooke • Grew up in Kent County and graduated from Caesar Rodney High School. • DSEA member and special education specialist in the #12 - Dori Connor (R) Appoquinimink, Christina, Colonial, NCCVT Running against Nicole Poore (D) and Brad Thomas (LIB) Friendly Incumbent Connor #14 - Bruce Ennis (D) Appoquinimink, Capital, Smyrna, Colonial, Polytech, NCCVT Running against Scott Unruh (R) Friendly Incumbent Ennis Venables www.dsea.org Bushweller #21 - Robert Venables (D) Delmar, Laurel, Seaford, Indian River, Sussex Tech Running against Bryant Richardson (R) and John Potter (LIB) Friendly Incumbent Smyrna School District. • If elected, will be the only practicing K-12 professional educator in the Delaware State Senate. • Understands the need to advocate strongly for the prioritization of pub- lic education in the state budget. • Strong supporter of collective bargaining rights and other labor protec- tions for Delaware's working families. #17 - Brian Bushweller (D) Caesar Rodney, Capital, Polytech Unopposed Friendly Incumbent October 2012 DSEA ACTION! 13
